Why a benchmark matters in fund evaluation.
A benchmark provides a reference point for evaluating performance and portfolio behaviour. The comparison is meaningful only when the benchmark is appropriate for the mandate and the periods are consistent.
A fund beating a weakly matched benchmark is not automatically evidence of skill. Also consider tracking error for passive products, active share or style for active products where relevant, and the portfolio's actual exposure.
